About the Project

The Mass Microfinance Borrowers Sensitisation Programme on Financial Literacy & Responsible Borrowing was designed to promote financial awareness, responsible borrowing behaviour, and protection of microfinance clients from exploitation and misinformation. This CSR initiative, supported by Arohan Financial Services Ltd. and implemented by AMFI-WB along with its member MFIs, focused on strengthening borrowers’ understanding of the microfinance ecosystem, responsible credit usage, and digital financial safety.

Objectives

  • To raise awareness against ringleaders and group-level manipulation in microfinance operations.
  • To improve understanding of credit scores and their long-term impact on borrowing eligibility.
  • To alert borrowers about sub-lending risks and the dangers of indirect borrowing.
  • To build awareness on KYC misuse and associated legal consequences.
  • To promote proper loan utilization for income-generating activities.
  • To encourage women entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihood models.
  • To reinforce the importance of Centre Meetings as platforms for transparency, peer accountability, and grievance redressal.

Mode of Implementation

The sessions combined interactive presentations, group discussions, and audio-visual aids. Borrowers actively participated through Q&A sessions and shared their field experiences. Case studies were used to simplify complex financial concepts, while Best Entrepreneur Awards celebrated local success stories that inspired others.

Key Outcomes

  • Improved borrower understanding of financial and digital literacy.
  • Strengthened awareness about responsible borrowing and repayment discipline.
  • Renewed commitment to group solidarity and repayment responsibility.
  • Positive feedback from participants requesting more regular awareness programmes.

Conclusion

The Mass Microfinance Borrowers Sensitisation Programme demonstrated the power of coordinated financial literacy efforts in strengthening borrower responsibility and protecting vulnerable clients. Through collaboration among MFIs and support from Arohan Financial Services Ltd., the initiative contributed significantly to building a financially aware and self-reliant borrower community across West Bengal.
